Breakfast Bar set up

Here is another food photography post.

If you are interested in food photography, then please follow my blogs. I am getting into my own routine at the moment when taking food pictures. Last week I completed a food blog and shoot with the use of aperture priority, but today I have returned to manual settings on my camera.

For each photograph I take now, I always use a tripod, a set light source and my ISO set at 100. I will always consider the background, props and placing of items in each photograph.

I also shoot ideas from influential imagery that I see from other food photographers, cooks or bloggers.

Breakfast Bar set up

Set up

I am using a plate to indicate position for the breakfast bars. You can see that I will have a white background, with the object placed of a white plastic sheet, with natural light.

Using a reflector

The first photograph shows the limited light coming from the window, which causes the background to not be a pure white.

I entend on using a silver reflector to help to reflect light on to the object and wall. I am using a reflected surface to be able to see the light reflection created from the reflector and to direct it to the areas required.

The object

In this phone photograph, you can see that I have included the food item and a chopping board, instead of the plate. I decided to add this coloured chopping board to blend with the food item.

My aim is to take a simple and minimalistic photograph. The breakfast bars I am using are only made of oats so rather simple in ingredients also. Everything about this shoot is simple with colour, tone, position and object.

The next set of phone images shows, how I have considered my own viewpoint for my composition and if I plan on using the rules of third. I intend on shooting the item so that it looks like it is larger than in reality, so I will set up my viewpoint so that the camera is positioned to be looking up to the item, at a low angle.

Once I have arranged the viewpoint and set up the composition, I used my silver reflector and directed this light where required. I have uploaded two final versions of this photo shoot. As one has a pure white background and the other has a grey background. So for each photo, the light has been either directed at the background or the item. I could have extended this further and lit the background and the object by adding in a further reflector or light source. Both images have been focused stacked, as the oats are a difficult element to focus on.

Take a look a look and let me know which is better.
