5 Tips for Preparing for a Fitness Photoshoot
How to Prepare for a Fitness, Dance, or Yoga Photoshoot
Planning a photoshoot that captures movement, energy, and strength requires careful preparation. Whether you're a personal trainer, athlete, dancer, yoga instructor, or fitness enthusiast, a well-executed shoot can elevate your brand, showcase your skills, and create powerful imagery that resonates with your audience.
But how do you ensure you look your best and that everything runs smoothly on the day? Preparation is key!
Here are five essential tips to help you get ready for your next fitness, dance, or yoga photoshoot, ensuring you achieve stunning, professional results.
1. Plan Your Outfits and Gear for a Standout Photoshoot
What you wear for your fitness, dance, or yoga photoshoot can make a significant difference in the final images. Your clothing should not only flatter your physique but also reflect your style, movement, and brand identity.
Tips for Choosing the Right Outfit:
Fit & Comfort: Wear clothing that allows full movement while maintaining a flattering fit. Leggings, sports bras, tank tops, or fitted shorts work well for highlighting form and flexibility.
Colour Palette: Choose solid colours or subtle patterns that align with your brand. Bright colours like red, blue, or yellow can add energy to the shot, while neutral tones provide a timeless look. Bring multiple outfits, I’ll offer guidance on how to complement the background, whether in a gym, studio, or outdoor setting.
Branding: If you have branded apparel, it can be a great marketing tool. However, I also suggest bringing non-branded options to keep the focus on your movement rather than logos. Avoid wearing fitness brands you're not partnered with.
Footwear or Barefoot: Depending on the shoot, you may go barefoot (yoga, dance, bodyweight workouts) or wear athletic shoes (HIIT, weight training, running). Ensure your footwear complements your outfit and the activity being captured.
Bringing variety in outfits and accessories allows for diverse, dynamic shots that truly represent your fitness journey.
2. Prepare Your Body
The goal of a fitness photoshoot is to capture the hard work you’ve put into your fitness journey. Preparation for the photoshoot should be focused on looking and feeling your best.
Tips for Body Preparation:
Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the shoot. Hydration will keep your skin looking fresh, give you energy, and help you perform your best during the shoot.
Nutrition: Eat a balanced diet leading up to the shoot to avoid bloating or feeling sluggish. Some athletes might prefer to adjust their diet slightly in the 24-48 hours before the shoot to look leaner. However, it’s important not to overdo it and make sure you have enough energy to perform the exercises during the shoot.
Skin Care: Take care of your skin in the days leading up to the shoot to ensure you have a healthy, glowing complexion. Consider moisturizing, exfoliating, or applying sunscreen to avoid harsh tan lines that might be distracting.
Rest: Get a good night's sleep before the photoshoot. Resting the night before will ensure you feel energized and confident.
3. Practice Poses and Movements
Practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to fitness photography. Knowing how to position your body, create strong lines, and emphasize the muscle groups you want to showcase will help make your photoshoot go smoothly.
Tips for Practicing Your Poses:
Mirror Practice: Take time in front of a mirror to practice the poses that highlight your physique or the movements you plan to showcase. Notice how your body looks from different angles and adjust accordingly. This is best to do this before shoot, so that we can plan to stage and pose the best for the shoot. These are the best yoga poses for a yoga photoshoot: Child’s Pose, Butterfly Pose, Easy Pose, Standing Backbend, Warrior II, Reverse Warrior, Tree Pose & Dancer Pose.
Highlight Key Muscles: If you want to showcase certain muscle groups, like your arms, legs, or core, practice flexing and posing in a way that highlights those areas. Make sure to create strong, confident poses that convey power.
Flow of Movement: If your photoshoot involves action shots, like jumps, squats, or push-ups, rehearse the flow of these movements beforehand. This will help you perform them seamlessly when the photographer captures the shot.
Work with me as your Photographer: We will discuss and plan for the types of shots you want to capture.
4. Set Realistic Expectations and Communicate with the Photographer
Before the photoshoot, it’s important to discuss your goals and expectations with me as your photographer. Knowing what kind of images you want to create will help me understand your vision and deliver results that align with your brand. I will provide visual example to help discuss and confirm your imagery that you wish for.
My process for the Communication we will have in the shoot process:
We will Discuss the Shoot Concept: Talk about the type of fitness photography you're looking for—whether it’s posed, action shots, close-ups, or lifestyle images. Share your vision and any specific ideas you have in mind, such as locations or equipment.
Review Your Portfolio: If you have a portfolio or reference images, share them with your photographer so they can understand your preferences and the types of shots you want.
Ask for Feedback: During the shoot, don’t be afraid to ask for feedback on your poses or movements. A good photographer will provide direction to ensure the best angles and lighting.
And please do not for get this one - 5. Relax and Have Fun
A fitness photoshoot should be a fun and empowering experience. The more relaxed and confident you feel, the better the final images will be. Stress and tension can show in photos, so it's important to stay calm, confident, and present.

Breathe and Smile: Remember to breathe deeply to stay relaxed and smile when appropriate. A natural smile or a look of focus can bring energy to your photos and make them feel more authentic.
