Bloody Mary Day

Being a food photographer I like to plan each shoot, look at what’s already been done and create my own. I like to consider the theme of the drink or food item. The purpose of a bloody Mary is to help recover after a heavy night before, so having a bloody Mary day after new years’ eve merriment is perfect.

Here is my process for planning a shoot, research the recipe for the food or drink item

Now that I have my recipe, I have brought ingredients, I am ready to consider props, background, and lighting.

Photoshoot

The next stage of my process is to try out lighting techniques to create my own version of a glass of Bloody Mary.

1st lighting set up. - Where I have used a silver umbrella on my flashgun as the key light and bounced light with both white and silver reflectors. I use this process to direct the light onto the glass and straw, with the reflectors adding extra light and creating limited reflections on the glass. I do like the light on the glass but the dark background is limited.

2nd lighting set up. - I want to show the time of year, so I have included a Christmas tree for the background. This is to add the Bokeh effect from the fairy lights and the shapes of the bubbles.

The images from above show the bokeh lights, which have brightened up the background. By observing these images, I can see the difference between the last two photographs, as one has room light on, with a slow shutter and the other without. I tried this technique to increase the Bokeh effect in the background. I prefer without the overhead light, added more lights and increased the speed, see below the result.

The image above shows limited focus, so the next set of finals have been focused stacked. I have photographed the drinks from the front, at a below angle and a plan view.

I have re-edited the images, to brighten up the glass and re-cropped them for social media promotion.
